Harvard College Japan Summer Internship Program

Harvard coordinates a wide array of summer internship opportunities in Japan for undergraduates in any concentration. As interns, students learn about the local culture of their city and workplace while contributing to a project defined by the host organization. Since 1988, nearly 300 Harvard College students have worked in consulting and financial firms, on the campuses of top Japanese universities, in the offices of parliamentary members and NGOs, in leading science labs, and even in a propeller factory, a hotel bakery, and an antiquarian bookstore. Internships last a minimum of 8 weeks, from early June to early August. Students may ask RI to help match their interests with host organizations in Japan, or they may find intern hosts on their own and apply to RI only for funding support.

Reischauer Institute Henry Rosovsky Undergraduate Summer Research Travel Grant

The Reischauer Institute was one of Harvard's first international and regional centers to offer summer travel grants for thesis research abroad. Since 1980, it has awarded competitive summer research travel grants for Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences for research and/or fieldwork in Japan, relating directly to a senior honors thesis in an area of Japanese studies. Typically the period of research is 2 months, but this may vary. Applicants must have completed at least two years of Japanese language study or have comparable proficiency; in the case of exceptionally strong projects, more limited language background may be considered. Students seeking to apply should consult with faculty members well in advance of the application deadline to plan and receive approval for a senior thesis topic.

Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Japanese Language Grants

The Reischauer Institute awards several grants each year to Harvard undergraduates in any concentration who plan to enroll in a summer Japanese language study program in Japan. The grant will provide funding toward tuition, travel, and living expenses. Preference will be given to students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Grants up to $7,000.

Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies

Student Organization Grants

The Asia-related centers at Harvard University offer grants to undergraduates and graduate student organizations for projects involving individual countries or spanning multiple countries in Asia. These grants are offered on a ongoing basis. Organizations are encouraged to apply as early as possible as funds are limited. Please submit an application to Jorge Espada at the Harvard Asia Center.
