The Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University invites applications for a Japan Digital Fellow to lead and facilitate digital scholarship initiatives.
This is a 2-year position commencing August 1, 2021.
APPOINTMENT TERM:
2 years, commencing August 1, 2021.
FELLOWSHIP GRANT:
- Japan Digital Fellow stipend of $65,000
- Project development support up to $5,000
- Health insurance coverage for the Fellow
- Office space and access to university libraries and other resources
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JAPAN DIGITAL FELLOW:
The Japan Digital Fellow position is intended for individuals working in the field of Japanese studies with an interest and commitment to the promotion of digital scholarship and digital methods of inquiry, publication, and research and preservation, particularly within the humanities and social sciences. Through their own projects and support of faculty and student research, the Japan Digital Fellow will help define and implement future directions for digital scholarship on Japan at Harvard.
The Japan Digital Fellow will focus on his/her own digital projects and participate in the intellectual life of the Japan Digital Research Center, Reischauer Institute, and Harvard communities through engagement with faculty, students, scholars, librarians, and digital technologists.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing support for faculty and students using digital tools and methods to conduct research on Japan. This will involve delivering workshops for the Harvard community on digital research methods, holding office hours for faculty and students using digital tools in their work, proactively reaching out to faculty and others to provide research support services.
- Working closely with the Japan Digital Scholarship Librarian on start-up projects engaging in digital methods and tools in advance of Japanese studies.
- Pursuing independent digital research projects in the field of digital methods and digital scholarship that engages in Japanese studies in the humanities or social sciences.
The Japan Digital Fellow is expected to reside in the Cambridge area during the term of appointment. A strong working knowledge of both Japanese and English is required. All applicants must have at minimum a Master’s degree in Japanese Studies or related field(s) or a Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant work experience. A Doctoral degree is not required for this position.

- Personal Statement: (on separate sheet, 1 page) Address your understanding of, and experience with, digital scholarship and its past or potential contributions to Japanese Studies.
- Proposal and Description: (on separate sheet, 1 page) Summarize the independent digital scholarship project(s) that you will undertake during the fellowship period.
- Short Essay: (on separate sheet, 2 pages) Introduce and discuss a digital project or activity that you have created or helped develop and the role it has played in your own thinking and development as a digital scholar. Please reference links to websites as supplementary material.
- Resume or CV: Provide citizenship status, current and permanent addresses, telephone number(s), email address; academic degrees with dates of conferral, discipline and institution as well as specific examples of digital projects (with available links to websites) and short explanations of involvement in these projects.
