Museums

The Arnold Arboretum features a large number of plant species native to Japan. In 2015, the Arboretum initated Expeditions Unveiled, an ongoing research project that investigates the history of its collections and plant exploration, including multiple expeditions to Japan.

The Harvard Art Museums – Fogg Museum, Busch-Reisinger Museum, and Arther M. Sackler Museum – hold an extensive collection of Japanese artwork in the Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art, as well as works from other regions of Asia and the world. In addition to exhibitions on Japanese artwork, the Museums offer various opportunities where students and faculty may collaborate with curators for teaching and research.

The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology has archived ethnographic materials from Japan and throughout Asia, which can be searched online. Collection highlights include Japanese art prints, ceramics, and samurai armor. Peabody Museum collections may be made available to students and faculty as part of courses and research.
