Film screening: Black Box Diaries with Journalist and Documentary filmmaker SHIORI ITO in person
FILM SCREENING from 5:15 -7:00pm
& DISCUSSION SESSION with Journalist and Documentary filmmaker SHIORI ITO from 7:00 - 8:00pm
Journalist and documentary filmmaker SHIORI ITŌ will appear in person on Oct. 15 (Wednesday) for a screening and discussion of her widely-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentary memoir Black Box Diaries (2024). Itō is the first Japanese documentary filmmaker to be nominated for an Academy Award.
The film chronicles Shiori Itō's ongoing investigation and pursuit of justice following the sexual violence she endured as a young journalist at the hands of a senior figure in Japanese media. Her unwavering resolve to challenge Japan's patriarchal judicial, political, and media systems has made her case a landmark in the legal and cultural recognition of gender-based violence in Japan.
In addition to being nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards, Black Box Diaries received the Peabody Award and was named one of the top 5 documentary films of 2024 by the National Board of Review. Despite these accolades, the film has yet to be screened in Japan.
Please join us in a conversation with Shiori Itō following the screening of Black Box Diaries. The discussion will be moderated by KAREN THORNBER, Harry Tuchman Levin Professor in Literature and Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University and AKIKO TAKEYAMA, Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, University of Kansas.
