美術建築史学科長
1993年にハーバード大学にて学士号（文学）を取得。その後、プリンストン大学にて1998年に修士号、2003年に博士号（美術・考古学）を取得し、2003年よりハーバード大学美術建築史学部に所属。Centre Parisien d’Etudes Critiques（1993年〜1994年）、東京大学（1998年〜2000年）にも所属していた。2002〜2003年、ワシントンD.C.のナショナル・ギャラリー・オブ・アートのCenter for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) にて、Andrew W. Mellon Fellowとして1年間所属した後、2004年〜2005年にGetty Postdoctoral Fellow を務める。東京大学、ハイデルベルグ大学、カンピーナス大学（ブラジル）、ロス・アンデス大学（コロンビア・ボゴタ）、メルボルン大学（オーストラリア）にて客員教授を歴任。
中世（1200年〜1600年）・近世（1600年〜1868年）の日本画及び日本建築史を専門とする。著書の 『Painting of the Realm: The Kano House of Painters in Seventeenth-Century Japan』（2012年）は、College Art Association よりCharles Rufus Morey Book Award 、アジア学会（AAS）よりJohn Whitney Hall Book Prize を受賞。2013年には、論文「Of Modes and Manners in Medieval Japanese Ink Painting: Sesshū’s Splashed Ink Landscape of 1495」でCollege Art AssociationよりArthur Kingsley Porter Prizeを受賞。その他の著作に、『The Artist in Edo』、『Japanese Zen Buddhism and the Impossible Painting』、『Irresolution: The Paintings of Yoshiaki Shimizu』、『Colorful Realm: Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings by Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800)』。 共編著に『Sesson Shūkei: A Zen-Monk-Painter in Medieval Japan』（Frank Feltens共編）、『Painting Edo: Selections from the Feinberg Collection of Japanese Art』（Rachel Saunders共編）、『Sōtatsu: Making Waves』（James Ulak共編）、『The Thinking Hand: Tools and Traditions of the Japanese Carpenter』（Mark Mulligan共編）、『Kenzo Tange: Architecture for the World』（Seng Kuan共編）、『Awakenings: Zen Figure Painting in Medieval Japan』（Gregory Levine共編）。
現在進行中のプロジェクトでは、中世の水墨画と正倉院宝物に焦点を当てている。2013年〜2018年には、ラドクリフ研究所長（Johnson-Kulukundis Family Faculty）を務めた。2018年、５年間にわたる学部生への指導が評価され、「Harvard College Professor」の称号が授与された。
