Ashinaga is a well-established Japanese NGO dedicated to providing underprivileged children, who have lost one or both of their parents due to disaster or those with parents who are unable to work due to disability, with emotional and financial support. The organization offers paid internships at its headquarters in Tokyo and its Kokorojuku dormitories in Tokyo and Kobe. Interns work five days a week and are guided through their projects by a dedicated team supervisor, simultaneously gaining transferable skills and insights into working at an international NGO.

Hidehiko Abe, the current master of Tonda Traditional Japanese Bunraku Puppet Troupe, invites college students from around the world to learn about bunraku, a form of traditional Japanese puppetry. Students stay in homestays with local natives and are thus more able to experience traditional mannerisms, customs, and cuisine, all while learning Japanese. The program is ideal for students experiencing their first time in Japan, or those who have had little cultural exposure while in Japan previously.
