2011 Earthquake and 'Shin-Godzilla': What have we learnt?
The talk will be preceded by a Special Movie Night Show screening "Shin-Godzilla" (2016).
The Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011 caused not only damage from the earthquake itself, but also serious damage to the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, resulting in extensive soil contamination from leaked radiation. Using the 2016 Japanese blockbuster movie "Shin Godzilla" as a model case, we will examine the pros and cons of the Japanese government's disaster response and leadership taken by the cabinet at the time (i.e. the way of public communication taken then), and the lessons to be learned by those of us involved in public policy in the future.
