Pre-modern Japan’s center of Mind Only Buddhism, Kōfukuji, organized its ritual and educational curriculum in a strict hierarchical manner. This presentation looks at one of the temple’s main internal ritual debates, the Jion Assembly, by addressing the temple’s educational and ritual framework. Thus, the Jion Assembly will be connected with the temple’s internal ritual network, demonstrating not only the relation between rituals within the temple, but also how the temple’s ritual curriculum connected the temple with the larger institutional and ritual framework of the state.
