Presenting a collection of Japanese 8-mm films from 1977-1990, "Hachimiri Madness! Japanese Independents from the Punk Years," hosted and organized by the Harvard Film Archive, introduced a new kind of film of that time period known as jishu eiga ("autonomous film"), which gave rise to some of the most well-known filmmakers in Japan today. Although experimental filmmakers originally sought to diverge from the mainstream industry, jishu films made a lasting impact both as an alternative genre and as a commercial success, attracting wide audiences and inspiring numerous films.
This film series was presented in collaboration with ALEXANDER ZAHLTEN, Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, with support from the Reischauer Institute.
