-

During the Spring 2017 semester, the Harvard Film Archive hosted a retrospective to celebrate the works and career of RIJS Visiting Fellow Ryusuke Hamaguchi, one of Japan's most talented young directors. The following three works were chosen to showcase the filmmaker's fascination with the performative and theatrical dimensions of cinema and everyday life.

This film series was co-presented with the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies, with special thanks to Prof. Theodore C. Bestor (RIJS Director), Stacie Matsumoto (RIJS Associate Director), and Becca Voelcker (Dept. of AFVS). The series was also accompanied by post-screening discussions with Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, in conversation with Haden Guest (HFA Director) and Prof. Alexander Zahlten (Dept. of EALC), and translated by Kimberlee Sanders (Dept. of EALC).
