Statement on Harassment and Discrimination

The Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies reaffirms its unambiguous commitment to the policy and practice of zero tolerance of harassment and discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation.

As a research institute within the broader university, we remain firmly committed to fostering an atmosphere of safe and healthy engagement with each other as faculty, staff, students, affiliates, and visitors. We strive to sustain an environment in which we can all do our best work and achieve our full potential, creating communities, networks, and professional opportunities on the basis of access and equity.

We honor the pursuit of truth, a commitment that includes supporting the highest standards of academic integrity. We reiterate the Institute’s goal of promoting intellectual exchange and discussion that is both informative and civil. In doing so, we state our unequivocal condemnation of hate speech, harassment, and intimidation in any of its forms.

If you have concerns or suggestions on ways in which we can better create such an environment please do not hesitate to reach out to us or other Harvard resources, such as the Office for Gender Equity, GSAS Office of Diversity and Minority Affairs, and Harvard Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging.
