Harvard Art Museums Curator Rachel Saunders on "The Mysteries of Prince Shotoku"
Rachel Saunders, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Associate Curator of Asian Art, is curating an upcoming exhibition on the sculpture Prince Shōtoku at Age Two and related objects, titled Prince Shōtoku: The Secrets Within (May 25–August 11, 2019). First acquired by Ellery Sedgwick in 1936, this sculpture will soon be gifted to the Harvard Art Museums in his memory. In preparation for this exhibition, she conducted research in Japan with Angela Chang, Assistant Director of the Harvard Art Museums, traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Hiroshima, to survey sculptures depicting Prince Shōtoku.
