Mary Brinton, Reischauer Institute Professor of Sociology and director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard was quoted in a recent The New York Times article about women opting out of marriage in Japan. Professor Brinton has been studying the factors at work in countries with historically low birth rates in parts of Europe and East Asia, especially Japan. She also discusses this research in a recent article in The Harvard Gazette.
