The Reischauer Institute congratulates Film Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (RIJS Visiting Artist in Residence, 2016-17) on receiving an Academy Award for “Drive My Car,” a melancholic drama based on a short story of the same name by novelist Haruki Murakami (RIJS Visiting Artist in Residence, 2005-06).⁠ This film is the second Japanese film to win best international film.

Earlier this year, “Drive My Car” was also named best picture in the non-English language category at the Golden Glove Awards and was the first non-English language film to win best picture from National Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
