Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Visiting Artist in Residence, 2016-17) Wins Best Screenplay at Cannes International Film Festival

The Reischauer Institute congratulates Film Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (RIJS Visiting Artist in Residence, 2016-17) on winning Best Screenplay at the 74th Cannes International Film Festival, for “Drive My Car,” a melancholic drama about an actor who seeks a chauffeur after his playwright wife disappears.

Hamaguchi’s film is based on a short story of the same name by novelist Haruki Murakami (RIJS Visiting Artist in Residence, 2005-06) from his 2014 short story collection Men Without Women.

Additionally, “Drive My Car” was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at Cannes. Earlier this year, Hamaguchi also won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival for “Guzen to sozo” (“Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy”).
